‘Chronic diseases may often be reversed and prevented by changing diet and lifestyle. In this important and compelling book, Eric Adams describes how. Highly recommended.’ - Dean Ornish MD, author of five New York Times bestsellers including UnDo It

Can you dramatically improve your health by embracing a plant-based diet? Eric Adams, mayor of New York City, believes that you can.

African Americans are heavier and sicker than any other group in the U.S., with nearly half of all Black adults suffering from some form of cardiovascular disease. After Adams woke up with severe vision loss one day in 2016, he learned that he was one of the nearly 5 million Black people living with diabetes-and, according to his doctor, he would have it for the rest of his life.

A police officer for more than two decades, Adams was a connoisseur of the fast-food dollar menu. Like so many Americans with stressful jobs, the last thing he wanted to think about was eating healthfully. Fast food was easy, cheap, and comfortable. His diet followed him from the squad car to the state senate, and then to Brooklyn Borough Hall, where it finally caught up with him.

But Adams was not ready to become a statistic. There was a better option besides medication and shots of insulin: food. Within three months of adopting a plant-based diet, he lost 35 pounds, lowered his cholesterol by 30 points, restored his vision, and reversed his diabetes. Now he is on a mission to revolutionize the health of not just the borough of Brooklyn, but of African Americans across the country.

Armed with the hard science and real-life stories of those who have transformed their bodies by changing their diet, Adams shares the key steps for a healthy, active life. With this book, he shows readers how to avoid processed foods, cut down on salt, get more fiber, and substitute beef, chicken, pork, and dairy with delicious plant-based alternatives. In the process he explores the origins of soul food-a cuisine deeply important to the Black community, but also one rooted in the horrors of slavery-and how it can be reimagined with healthy alternatives.

Features more than 50 recipes from celebrities and health experts, including Paul McCartney, Queen Afua, Jenné Claiborne, Bryant Jennings, Charity Morgan, Moby, and more!

The journey to good health begins in the kitchen-not the hospital bed!

Review
“I can personally attest to the truth Eric shares within the pages of Healthy at Last. This book exposes the injustices within our current food system and the evolution from slave food to soul food. It explains how what we eat is killing us and plaguing us with chronic illness, but not without offering a clear path forward toward eating to live and providing you with the tools necessary to take it. Eric’s book will empower you to change your life and the lives of those around you.”

I went vegan with my diet in 2015, so I'm familiar with a number of authors and books in this subject. This book is very readable and relateable. I was raised on a very southern diet. Lots of fat, sugar, salt and love. Only problem is that diet will love you to a premature death. This is not a textbook and, in my opinion, is engaging entertaining and educating. Not too long, not too short. There are lots of references that can lead you to more great resources.

March 23, 2021, this 66 year old was admitted to the ER, unrelated to diabetes. Routine blood work showed fasting glucose of 123. I know this is not as bad as some but this told me I needed to do something drastic. During the pandemic I gained a lot of weight due to cooking lots of foods that were delicious but very unhealthy. Ordered glucometer immediately, this verified my glucose was prediabetes range. Searched Amazon books for diabetes reversal and came across this gem on Kindle written by Eric Adams who currently is the amazing mayor of New York. This book may very well save my life as he is so relatable and through his dialogue gave me the knowledge and inspiration to make the changes needed for success. It took several months for my glucose numbers to fall into the normal range and it WAS NOT easy but so worth it. I have lost 45 pounds and am aiming toward 10 more. Confession: I am not always 100% vegan but I try on most days. I have learned what foods cause sugar spikes and they are typical: pasta, white rice, white potatoes , sugar. For some reason corn is ok in reasonable amounts. Typical breakfast is almond milk smoothie with blueberries, avocado, ground flaxseed and organic plant protein. If I have lunch it is a salad with legumes and lots of vegetables. Dinner is a hearty bean and vegetable soup with salad; roasted vegetables and whole grains; or sometimes fish and vegetables. If I snack it is almonds or almond butter with 1/2 apple. Going on over one year now and it is rare my fasting glucose is above 100. I also try to get in 5 days per week of aerobic and weight training. Have had many glucose A1C tests since beginning this program and all results have been normal. I cannot thank Eric Adams enough for his inspiration. I purchased several books but his was the one that changed my path for good. Take care and read this book if you need help with your glucose numbers and are ready to be serious. The rewards are so worth the dedication and after you learn how to make your menus work it gets much easier. Like Eric says, be adventurous and try lots of different vegetables, fruits, spices to make your meals interesting.

I liked this book so much that I bought more copies to give to friends. Everyone liked it and one said this was exactly what he had been looking for. It's written in a conversational, easy-to-read style which will attract more people to Adams' program. I also like his story of how he beat diabetes through a plant-based diet. My only complaint is that the book does not contain the complete recipe for the breakfast smoothie that Adams demonstrates on a youtube video. I have watched that video several times and still cannot understand one ingredient of the several he mentions. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to adopt a pant-based diet.
